What is a Goalie Thinking
I hold both gloves up.
The catcher should never be below the cross bar in the stance. The move down to catch a puck is much faster than the rise up to catch a puck.
On the stick side I hold it up too. Yes all the NHL goalies do it wrong. They double cover on a portion of the goalie sick because they hold it
down so low on the shaft.
Glove high on the stick side has many advantages. Holding it like this, the stick can poke at a close range puck and the blocker hand can drop or rise on the shaft and when you drop to your knees and the blade of the stick does not need leave the surface of the ice like it does when held low on the blade. This also statistically decreases your coverage.
NHL goalies mostly take the stick out of play when they drop to the ice because they hold it too low and it sweeps by the 5 hole ! (not Johnathan Quick) Lots of goals go through the butterfly.
It is a 4 by 6 space to protect and statistically speaking just get in the way with as much as you can and stay there !
